11 years ago today when I woke up early I came out to the kitchen to see the light on our caller id blinking. I could feel something was wrong, but didn't have any idea that it could be. I checked the history and it showed the Roger, Toby's oldest brother, called four times during the night. Strange, why didn't we hear the phone? Looking back, it was a good thing that Toby didn't hear the phone that night. It would be the last night of full sleep for a very long, long time.
Kirk passed away at 1:20 am after losing a game of Russian roulette. Still after 11 years it seems so stupid.
Patty and Jake were devastated as any parents would be. Patty wrote this for her son:
Kirk
Born to us during a thunderstorm
amidst lightning and rain
at Fitzimmons Army Hospital in
Aurora, Colorado
on September 27th , 1963
He was baptized Kirk Eugene Jacobson
at Presbyterian Church in
White SulpherSprings, Montana
in May, 1971
Kirk attended McClintock High School
and received his G.E.D.
from Mesa Community College.
"And with only one try," he would remind us.
Kirk believed in many things.
That friends are family.
He knew more jokes then you did & couldn't
wait to tell you a new one.
His smile was quick, crooked
& showed his dimples.
He drove old, smoky, rattle-trap cars,
that left oil spots on the driveway.
He drove off down the street smiling back at us
with a wave of his hand.
He left us in the middle of the night
on a warm evening in Arizona.
July 12th, 1997
He thought he was invincible.
We close our eyes & clasp our memories
to our heart and say
"We love you Kirk."
We sure do miss Kirk. We still speak of him to the boys and reminisce with family members often.
The Jacobson family planted a tree in a Tempe park in memory of Kirk. We have had many of picnics by that tree in the last eleven years. Tonight will be no different.
We miss you bro!
